Blue Iris Help FAQ

July 2010

Here are some answer for you...to your questions....please look between the text of your questions..

I would assume that adding cameras, capture cards, and hard disks used for storage and not the operating system would not constitute significant hardware changes requiring reseting the key.

>> RAM size, C: drive size, Operating System changes trigger the deactivation

The only issue I found is when playing back blue iris codec vids the proram sometimes crashes.

>> This has been reported before, but upon receiving the file here for testing, it is never reproducible.  The CPU specs seem irrelevant.  My current feeling is that there is an OS issue (this is almost always XP), or an antivirus or malware scanning issue.  Try exempting the clips folder from scanning.

I think it is when playing back vids frm different cams and one cam has more resolution than another, so the recordings have different sizes and frame rates.

>> should not be relevant

This only seems to happen when a vid is played, then select another one to view.

>> if you find a (largely) consistent reproducible scenario, please send the files with instructions to cause a crash, and it will be repaired immediately if I can reproduce it.

Another question I have is the blue ires codec itself.
If it is a codec installed on the pc, why can't other players like real or windows media use the codec and play the vids?
That would be a lot more convenient than only blue iris can play it.

>> the default is XVID.  You may install this codec on any PC by going to xvid.org.  However the BVR file format is Blue Iris only.  You can either switch to AVI, or use the Export function to convert BVR to AVI as needed for other PCs.

John

I have completed the setup on the Blue Iris and all is running great, including the port forwarding for the internet setup and the motion detection on all the cameras.

Thank you so much for all your help yesterday, It work just like you said once I removed the card, rebooted and let windows do its thing. after reinstalling the card and the next reboot it saw the new hardware and I just followed the directions like you said and it was up and running. I then today hooked it up to the router and did the port forwarding and motion detect setup and we are good to go!

My sister is ecstatic as I sent the link to her work and now she is watching her backyard and home.

You can send the Key now for the full version of Blue Iris

Thanks Again

Jack

Problem
======

I need to restart the demo...my time ran out and I am still in the testing phase!

Our Response
===========

To restart the demo, run regedit and find the key hklm/software/perspective software/blue iris/registration and delete it.

Problem - Flicker and Flip
===================

My 2 CCTV cameras flicker and flip back and forth. My IP camera is solid. Any suggestions?

Our Response
===========

Flicker is usually caused by a poor connection or inadequate power to a camera, especially when sent over a longer cable.

Try bringing the camera right to the back of the card to see if the problem goes away.....and thus determine the cause.

Also, the FPS is likely set too high on a card with multiple inputs sharing a single chip ... try lowing the FPS.  When using all 4 inputs on a single-chip card, the FPS should be somewhere in the 1-5 range.

Problem - Lockup when unattended
=========================

 My machine locks up after 20 minutes.

Our Response
===========

You may wish to disable any screen savers that run as they may interfere with the Blue Iris
program. We suggest you turn off the monitor when you are not using it instead of using a
screen saver

Problem
======

I am unable to view the webserver from the same machine, via http://localhost/. Any ideas?

Our Response
===========

localhost always refers to the PC the user is on... so that should work unless the server is not on port 80.  You may have changed this, or Blue Iris will go to 81 automatically if 80 is already being used.

Problem
======

I have a question, with this software can you play back whilst recording continuously,

Our Response
===========

The Blue Iris DVR format allows you to play the video while it is being recorded.  The AVI and WMV formats by definition do not.

Problem
======

I left it recording for a while and then it had locked up; I could not get it to end task with the task manager; had to reset the computer to get out of it; even start - shutdown would not do it.
I tried again and the same happened after a while.

Our Response
===========

There are so many areas to address.

Did you disable the screen saver?

How many other programs were running...

As an example.

Please send a screen shot of the EXPANDED  view of your start-up window

start - run - msconfig - start-up tab (several screen shots may be required)

then also...send me the expanded view screen shots of the EXPANDED views (click on all the plus signs) of your  Device Managers

click start - control panel - system icon - hardware tab - device managers.

When was the last time you defragged the hard drive?

When was the last time you did a scandisk/check disk on the hard drive?

Is there an anti-virus program trying to do a scan?

Is there a possible heating issue...are the fans clean - is the computer under a desk - or against a wall?

Follow-Up response...(he sent screen shots that showed he had over 25 things running at start-up)

Here is a quick response to your screen prints

You have far too many things happening at start-up

The maximum you should have is 4 or 5 items.

Untick just about everything.

"If I was to get out of bed in the morning, and my wife barked out 20-30 things for me to do before I got my second foot on the floor, I would go back to bed!"

Suggest you simplify the environment and disable the screen saver...and try it again.

 I am wondering if you maybe able to help me with something....

When installing the drivers for the cards; the computer suddenly restarted with no warning... To cut a long story short it is because there are two remaining star imavision entries still showing in device manager; if I try to remove or disable them it does the same - restarts with no warning. I have tried installing the drivers till it restarts, but when I look in device manager it shows two Conexant BTPCI WDM Video controllers (I have two cards?) but no Audio controller... I presume this is not yet right? I have not tried to go any further as yet.

 There is a procedure to remove the old drivers when you are installing the new drivers.

Are you following it?

From our step-by-step procedure

Read this if you have an old version of PICO or DICO previously installed on your computer
From a customer...During the installation of the btwdmdrvinstaller5.3.8 drivers there where 2 choices; "Install this Driver" and "Uninstall any previously installed driver associated with the Bt8xx hardware".

I selected the Uninstall since the card had used drivers from DICO and PICO2000. During the uninstall it did  successfully remove drivers left behind from DICO and PICO2000. When it was done uninstalling, it requested a reboot which I did. After the PC booted up I re-started the btwdmdrvinstaller5.3.8 driver install and successfully installed the driver and followed all your install steps , again with with success. .

 Hi John,
Yes I had followed it; it was when it itself tried to delete these problems it restarted.

I have now sorted it; I went into safe mode and they deleted ok from device manager; I have now restarted and will try installing the new drivers again; I will highlight ''delete old drivers'' first again to see what happens now.

Feb 9, 2009

I have resolved the problem and got the drivers to load onto the machine.  I wanted to share with you what I think was the culprit for the sake of those that may follow with a similar problem.

First of all I did change the PCI slot location for the card but I don’t think that was the problem.  It doesn’t hurt to try all possibilities, however, as you well know.

Also, I did shut down some of the startup programs that come up when the machine is booted.  That is usually a good technique for the older machines and maybe even newer ones, especially if they run a little slow.

But what I think was causing the real problem was I still had the original software on the machine that allows the camera(s) to work in a wireless mode.  The software is a “monitor” type program that allows you to see in real time what the camera is seeing and, if needed, you can start a recording.  When you start the program a display window appears that shows the image the camera is seeing.  I was using this software prior to learning about Blue Iris and the capture card as a method to operate my security system.  I think the “monitor” program was creating a registry problem after the driver software was installed even though at the end I was getting the message that the drivers have been installed successfully.  It sort of lead me down the wrong path until I looked in the Device Manager to verify the driver was installed and found the conflicts.

And, I did see in your instructions where you recommended removing any previously installed capture card but I thought that referred to hardware and didn’t stop to think that this “monitor” program might cause the same problem.

Especially in this case where the registry appeared to be messed up.

 So, end of problem.

Also, I tested the cameras on all the ports on the back of the capture card and all work fine.  Having said that, I think you can now send me the registration code so I can finalize the installation.

 I don’t think there is anything I forgot unless you can think of anything.  Again, everything is working fine.

I have been having some problem getting the frame rates.

The card (PICO 30 fps card) itself installed fine exactly as you explain in the FAQ page you sent me.

My problem is that I can't get any separate settings to work. Here is what it is doing.

I am running 3 Speco cams  and I can get all 3 to show up.

But if I set composite 0 or it is the input on the opposite side of the card screw point.....to say 15 frames....I will get about 5 frames per cam but they jump all around......if I set the FPS to 10 on the #1 input...I will get a stable 3.33 approx....per cam. ??    Jerry

Hello Jerry,

This is on my list of things to do... prevent the frame rate from being set too high for cameras sharing a single chip.  The chip can do 30, but that's for 1 input.  If you have 3 inputs, the theoretical is 10 each, but Blue Iris needs time to switch the input, so it will be more like 5, 6, or at max 7.5 for each of 3 inputs.

You will need to visit each of the 3 cameras in Blue Iris and set the frame rate on each to match.  If one is 10 and another is 5, it is unclear which will be used, as Blue Iris uses one of the cameras as a "master" which sends out video to the other dependents.

Thanks

Blue Iris Video Security and webcam Software

DEMO Version only supports one camera.

On 30 FPS BT8x8 card purchased from Duncans Online

Question 1. On 30 FPS BT8x8 card purchased from Duncans Online, how do I know which connector is the one for the first camera - the only camera active in DEMO mode before I register and pay for my Blue Iris software license?   (the demo now supports 4 cameras)

Answer 1. The first camera uses the connector at the bottom of the card.

NOTE: I am referring to Camera 1 is the first (top-most) instance of "Video Composite" in the DirectShow driver, Conexant's BtPCI Capture, video settings.

Question 2. How do I add cameras after the first one. I seem to be redefining the first camera's name, short name, and position# in the General Tab, and the DirectShow Driver Card's Input Pin in the Video tab, but I am merely redefining the one camera I see?

Answer 2. To add a second camera, you need to be in the Camera Properties screen ( The Gears Icon Tab ). ( If the "Open in Desktop Window option" is clicked, your camera will be in a different Operating System window.- just find it and click on it. ) The right-click the image to get a context menu and select "Add new camera".

You can specify your next camera. In my case I had to set:

General Tab Dialog

  • Name
  • Short name
  • position#

Video Tab Dialog

  • Device Radio Button for DirectShow Driver
  • from the pull-down select Conexant's BtPCI Capture
  • Input pin Video Composite ( select second instance of Video Composit for second Input Pin )

You may want to change other settings on a per camera basis. You can always go back and edit you camera by right-clicking its image and selecting "Camera properties" from the context menu.

May 2010

I need to setup a system that send email alerts with snaps when motion is detected, but only during certain hours (when my store is closed).

1. Can the email alert system be scheduled?
2. Does it attach a photo of the event that triggered the alert?

Answer

Yes and yes ... you will see a "Schedule" tab when you add/edit a camera ... this allows you to setup times for motion, recording, and alerts.
