PTZ stands for Pan, Tilt and Zoom. A camera is set in a particular place, but has the ability to turn in a complete circle, and tilt at different angles both up and down. In addition they zoom in on objects.

PTZ cameras are controlled via a remote or a compatible computer system. You can program the camera to move it in a set pattern or control it manually with a a keyboard or remote. Simply input commands or use a joystick to obtain degrees of angle and rotation or zoom, and the camera moves accordingly.

The optical zoom  function of a camera uses the lens within the camera to draw the image closer. Using the optics of the camera, the image is bought forward much the same way as binoculars and other such instruments. When using optical zoom the image quality remains the same and the full resolution of the camera can be used on the zoomed image. Different levels of optical zoom can be achieved by changing the distances between the lens'. The motion of the front lens moving outwards on a camera is the lens achieving a greater level of zoom.

Digital zoom on the other hand is not a “true” form of a zoom. In fact, the image itself doesn't actually come any closer because the optics in the camera do not move. Digital zoom works much the same way as it does on your PC at home. The idea behind digital zoom is that it takes a portion of the image and expands that image. What happens is that the section of image that you are looking at becomes larger - not closer. The image simply looks closer because it has been expanded.

Digital zoom does not produce the quality imaging as optical zoom. However, when both zoom capabilities are combined, the zoom quality and possibilities available are increased significantly.

This camera is equipped with a vari-focal lens, meaning its focal length can be adjusted anywhere between its designated range. The Focal Length determines the field of vision. The smaller the focal length, the wider the field of vision. Take a look at the images below. Look how they seem to zoom in as the size of the lens is changed.
